CBD for Pets – Understanding the Rules and Your Options
Pets hold a cherished place in our homes. Whether you share life with a loyal dog or an independent cat, their wellbeing is often as important as our own. In return for the companionship, joy, and unconditional affection they offer, we strive to give them the highest standard of care. That means understanding their needs, responding to their behaviour, and when possible, exploring natural ways to support their health.
In recent years, CBD has become a point of interest for pet owners across the UK and Scotland. The question many are asking is whether CBD – in the form of oil, balm, or even edible formats – might offer support for issues like anxiety, seizures, or joint discomfort in pets. The potential is promising, but there are important legal considerations to understand.

Pets, CBD and the Regulations in the UK
Cannabidiol (CBD) is classified as a veterinary medicine when intended for use in animals. According to the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR), any substance used to restore, correct, or modify the physiological functions of animals is legally considered a medicine.
This means that in the UK, any CBD product for pets must hold a valid marketing authorisation issued by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD). At this time, no CBD products are authorised for veterinary use. This makes it illegal to market, advertise, or sell such products without the required approval.

Our Position at Flora Fusion
Flora Fusion is a trusted supplier of full-spectrum CBD across Scotland and the UK. We have long supported our customers and their pets with carefully produced CBD supplements. However, in accordance with UK regulation and the VMR, we have temporarily withdrawn our pet-specific product listings while we work towards full compliance.
We are currently engaging with statutory agencies and progressing our application for marketing authorisation. This will allow us to reintroduce a fully registered product range in the future, ensuring that our commitment to pets and their wellbeing continues within a fully regulated framework.
What Does This Mean for You?
While we work behind the scenes, we understand this development may create uncertainty for existing customers who have relied on our products for pets. Here’s what you should know:
• CBD products for pets cannot currently be sold or promoted unless they are licensed as veterinary medicines.
• However, a qualified veterinarian may prescribe a human CBD product legally acquired from a compliant source, provided it follows the prescribing cascade under Regulation 8 of the VMR.
• Giving your pet a CBD product without veterinary oversight is not permitted and may result in legal implications.
We strongly encourage pet owners to consult their veterinarian before considering CBD for any animal health issue.
